Transition Away From Fossil Fuels
Holding the line between Santa Marta and Tuvalu.

What this campaign is about
Transition Away From Fossil Fuels brings our transition campaign and Grow the Coalition of the Willing together in one effort: sustaining momentum between the First Conference in Santa Marta and the Second Conference in Tuvalu in 2027, and beyond.
We Don't Have Time Foundation proposes to work under the direction of the co-hosts, Tuvalu and Ireland, and in support of the Tessariki Task Force. Our role would connect political leadership with civil society, the public and global policymakers through facilitation, media partnership and knowledge partnership. Participating governments retain political ownership and set the direction, priorities and agenda.
The proposed work starts with a facilitation hub at COP31 in Antalya in November 2026, agreed with the co-hosts and task force. It continues with prepared dialogues, bilateral meetings, public communication and accessible knowledge throughout the months leading to Tuvalu, including carrying findings from the Irish scientific pre-conference into stakeholder dialogue.
Why it is needed
Political commitment is not the constraint; capacity is. Ministries already carrying full COP workloads need dedicated support to sustain engagement between conferences, maintain a clear public record and turn voluntary participation into lasting momentum.
Santa Marta worked because it was flexible, forward-leaning and solutions-oriented. This campaign seeks to protect that approach: bringing a wide range of stakeholders into the conversation, keeping the focus on solutions and sustaining relationships beyond Tuvalu.
Facts and data
- Fifty-nine states took part in the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta in April 2026, under Colombian and Dutch leadership. We Don't Have Time was its official global media partner.
- The conference established three workstreams, a Science Panel for the Global Energy Transition and a voluntary coordination group.
- Tuvalu and Ireland will co-host the Second Conference in 2027, preceded by a scientific pre-conference in Ireland. The Tessariki Task Force is being developed to coordinate Pacific fossil fuel phase-out efforts and the conference.
- The Foundation's proposed support role would first be agreed in writing with Tuvalu and Ireland, developed with the Tessariki Task Force and communicated to the coordination group.
What we want to achieve
- 1Facilitate prepared dialogues, bilateral meetings and outreach, connecting political leadership with civil society and policymakers, recording agreed actions and following them up.
- 2Establish a COP31 facilitation hub with private meeting space and a media studio, coordinated with the co-hosts, task force and Pacific partners.
- 3Maintain a continuous public record, a ministerial interview series and a global broadcast of the Second Conference so citizens can follow commitments and progress.
- 4Translate workstream findings and Science Panel outputs into usable briefings and accessible public explanations, including findings from the Irish scientific pre-conference.
- 5Develop a costed proposal with the task force for continuing engagement and communications support after Tuvalu, for decision by participating governments.
Where to go next
- → Support facilitation, media and knowledge partnerships through Tuvalu and beyond
- → Agree the support role, scope and budget with the co-hosts and Tessariki Task Force
